What does “authentic food” even mean? Why do people search for different types of “authentic food”? These are some of the questions I’ve asked myself before. The answer I’ve come to realize isn’t just about eating tasty food, but the history behind it as well. People want to be proud of their heritage and who they are, and food plays a big part in that. Food is part of the identity of different cultures and people around the world.
The first stop on our authentic food journey takes us to Ukraine to try varenyky. It is a popular Ukrainian dish.
Ukrainians eating varenyky as an everyday meal or as a festive dish. It is considered a national dish of Ukraine. We made up varenyky from dough filled with items such as cottage cheese, potato, meat, cabbage, blueberry, and so much more. You must try the varenyky! You will become their lovers forever.
Varenyky are typically boiled and served with sour cream. But you also can bake and fry them as well. Varenyky are a Ukrainian take on Pierogi’s which are known worldwide. Today pierogis have grown to be cooked in various ways around the world, a testament to their rise in popularity.
Jerk Chicken from Jamaica
The next stop on our authentic food journey takes us to the island of Jamaica for Jerk Chicken.
Jerk Chicken is a staple of Jamaica known worldwide for its spices and flavor, a must try for everyone. Jerk refers to how the chicken is seasoned and cooked. This is done by marinating the chicken in a marinade filled with ingredients such as allspice and scotch bonnet peppers then smoked over pimento wood. The resulting flavor is savory and spicy with also a hint of sweetness.
The great thing about jerk chicken is the recipe can be altered to be more spicy or sweet, depending on your preferences.
Bunny Chow from South Africa
From the island of Jamaica we now travel to the country of South Africa for a dish known as Bunny Chow. This authentic food dish starts with hollowing out a half loaf of bread and filling it with curry. The origins of this dish date back to the 1940’s when Indian workers in South Africa needed a way to carry their lunch to work. Loaf’s of bread was cheap and readily available at the time which became the perfect vessel to take their curry in. This dish goes to show sometimes the simplest of ideas can also be the tastiest.
Authentic Food from Italy – Pizza
Our last stop on our authentic food journey around the world takes us to Italy, the birthplace of one of the most recognizable meals today. That’s right, pizza. Pizza as we know it today has its origins in Italy dating back to the 16th century when tomatoes were first introduced to Europe.
In modern times the pizza has become an iconic food, with different areas around the world putting their own spin on it. From authentic Italian style pizza to New York style pizza, the possibilities are endless when it comes to preparing this dish. Pizza truly is one of those foods that can bring everyone together.
