German food is very hearty, but they don’t just eat sausages and sauerkraut. Popular German food is far more varied.

A German breakfast will consist of bread, toast, and rolls with marmalade, jam, and eggs. They will often have deli meats, ham and salami as well. Breakfast in Germany is an elaborate affair and they will often ask friends to eat with them.

Traditionally lunch has been the main meal of the day with just sandwiches for dinner, but this is now changing.

German food is not the same in different parts of the country.  Generally the cuisine in the north is healthier and includes fish from the North Sea and the Baltic. A popular German fish dish is pickled roll mop herrings. In the south of the country carbs such as dumplings, noodles, potatoes and creamy sauces are popular.

In most towns you will find street food including pretzels, sausages and donuts.  The Christmas markets are stunning and you can watch chestnuts and almonds being roasted as well as buy potato cakes with apple sauce, salmon or onions.

Now we will give you a few recipes of popular German food which we hope you will want to make.

Authentic German Bread (Bauernbrot)

Yields 1 big or 2 small loaves. Ingredients: 1 1/2 ounces compressed fresh yeast, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1-quart warm water, 8 cups all-purpose flour, 8 cups white rye flour, 1 teaspoon white sugar, 2 tablespoons salt, 2 cups warm water

To make this sourdough German bread, crumble the yeast in a bowl. Whisk in the sugar and the warm water. Slowly mix in 4 cups of all-purpose flour until there are no lumps. Cover the bowl with a towel and leave to stand at room temperature for 24 hours.

The following day stir the mixture and then leave for another 24 hours.

After the next 24 hours get a bowl and stir together the rye flour, the other 4 cups of all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt. Mix this into the dough and stir in the 2 cups of warm water.

Knead the dough for between 15 – 20 minutes. If it’s too hard to add a little extra water. Then put it in a bowl, cover and leave to double in size. This should take 1 – 2 hours.

Knead the dough for another 5 minutes and shape into either 1 or 2 loaves. Put them on baking sheets and leave to rise for 1 hour.
