Green bean casserole is a very traditional North American side dish, generally served at Thanksgiving. It was created in 1955 by Campbell’s Soup Company and it became popular almost immediately. The main ingredients are green beans, cream of mushroom soup and French’s crispy fried onions. However, since then there have been variations of green bean casserole created and we are here to give you a sample of traditional casseroles and some modern ones.
Green Bean Casserole Recipe
French’s green bean casserole is the ultimate classic dish. It’s such an easy dish and only takes 55 minutes to prepare.
- 3/4 cup milk
- 10 1/2 ounce can of Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom soup
- 14 1/2 ounce 2 cans of green beans
- 1 1/2 cups French’s crispy fried onions
- To make it mix a ¾ cup of milk together with a 10 ½ ounce can of Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom soup. To this add pepper to taste.
- Mix in 2 14 ½ ounce cans of green beans. However, you can use fresh green beans or frozen if you prefer.
- Then take 1 and ½ cups of French’s crispy fried onions and mix half into the bean mixture.
- Bake at 350F for 30 minutes and then pour the remaining onions on top and bake for a further 5 minutes.

Green Bean Casserole Rehashed
This is the first of our alternatives to the traditional green bean casserole. What you have to do is fry 10 slices of bacon followed by 10 sliced mushrooms seasoned with onion powder and garlic. Mix in a cup of cream and allow to thicken. Put 18 ounces of frozen green beans into a casserole dish and pour the mixture over it. Sprinkle parmesan cheese and crumbled bacon on top. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes.
Fresh Green Bean Casserole
There’s nothing better than fresh green beans and this recipe is definitely one to try. First, boil a pound of beans for 6 minutes. Then fry 12 ounces of sliced mushrooms and chopped onion. Add garlic, the beans and 2 cups of cream of chicken soup. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes, sprinkle over some breadcrumbs and bake for a further 10 minutes.
Green Bean Casserole Redone
Don’t like mushrooms? Well, try this green bean recipe. There’s not a mushroom in sight. Mix together a 14 ounce can of sweetcorn and a 16 ounce can of green beans. Put these into a casserole dish and pour over 2 cans of cream of celery soup, together with a finely chopped onion. As a final touch add a crumble topping consisting of 2 cups of crushed crackers, garlic and margarine. Bake at 325F for 1 hour.
Spinach and Green Bean Casserole
Here we have another alternative green bean recipe and it’s so simple to make. All you have to do is mix all the ingredients together; 1 cup sour cream, a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup, a 14 ounce can of spinach (or use frozen if you prefer), 2 15 ounce cans of green beans and a can of French’s fried onions. As a topping for this dish, sprinkle over another cup of French’s fried onions. Bake at 375F for 40 minutes.
A Fresh Green Bean Casserole
Here is another fresh bean casserole recipe and who doesn’t like fresh food? Before you can put the beans in the casserole dish you have to boil them for 6 minutes. Then fry 4 cups of chopped onions with 2 tablespoons vinegar, 2 teaspoons sugar, garlic, oregano and basil. This needs to be cooked for 15 minutes. Put this on top of the beans, followed by parmesan and sliced tomatoes. Bake at 400F for 35 minutes.
Moreish Green Bean Casserole
This green bean recipe is very easy to prepare. First heat a can of condensed soup, either mushroom or celery, whichever you prefer. To this add 3 ounces of cheese. You can choose whichever cheese you like best. Put this in a casserole dish with 2 15 ounce cans of green beans and a 4 ounce can of mushrooms (or use fresh). The topping is a can of French’s fried onions. Bake at 325F for 30 minutes.
Mom’s Green Bean Casserole
Here we have a green bean casserole like your mom used to make. First, make a roux out of butter and flour. To this add a cup of sour cream, pre-fried onions, salt and a pinch of sugar. Mix and then add 3 14 ½ ounce cans of green beans. This is very indulgent as you then get to sprinkle 2 cups of your favorite cheese on top together with ½ cup crumbled crackers. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes.
Jazzed-up Green Bean Casserole

Fry 6 slices of bacon and crumble. Mix together 2 10 ounce cans of condensed cream of mushroom soup, ½ cup chopped almonds, ¾ can of French’s fried onions and garlic. Season to taste. Add 2 14 ½ ounce cans of green beans and a 15 ounce can of sweetcorn and bake at 350F for 20 minutes. Then add the crumbled bacon and the rest of the can of onions and bake for a few more minutes.
Light Green Bean Casserole
Perhaps you are watching your weight and think that a green bean casserole is to fattening. Well, here we have an alternative that won’t put on the pounds. Combine a 10.75 ounce can of condensed reduced-fat cream of mushroom soup with ¼ cup of roasted red peppers, a cup of chopped walnuts, salt, and pepper. Fry an onion in low fat spread and add ½ cup crumbled crackers. Mix this all together and add 3 9 ounce packs of frozen green beans. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes and there you have it, a light version of an American classic.
