Marinara sauce is a classic sauce. In Italy, this sauce adds mainly to pasta dishes or other dishes like risotto. Marinara sauce recipe includes tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and onions. There are variations that can include olives, capers, spices, and wine.

Marinara Sauce Recipe

This is  standard marinara sauce recipe. Marinara sauce involves tomatoes, garlic, herbs, onions. While you can add quite a few things to marinara sauce and still call it marinara sauce, it never contains meat, anchovies, or cheese.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic (chopped)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 8 oz passata
  • 14 oz tin of tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • salt
  1. Heat the olive oil and sauté the garlic and onion until they are tender. This should take 2 – 4 minutes. Stir often.
  2. Put in the tin of tomatoes, the passata, oregano, sugar and salt.
  3. Bring to the boil and then simmer for about 20 minutes.
  4. Keep stirring while it is simmering. It is then ready to add to a dish.
